He holds a trident or spear diagonally across his body in his right hand and a round shield bearing a monogram in his left. The legend ΤΑΡΑΣ appears to the lower left and ΠΥ to the right of the field, the latter denoting a secondary magistrate's abbreviation. The reverse composition exemplifies the finest tradition of Tarentine coin engraving, with accomplished anatomical rendering and a lively marine setting. |
