The composition reflects the Tarentine tradition of depicting the dioskouroi or armed horsemen in dynamic, high-relief style. The flan is broad and irregularly shaped, characteristic of South Italian hammered coinage of this period. | Beschrijving keerzijde | The city founder Taras, nude and shown in left-facing profile, rides upon the back of a dolphin to the left above stylized wave-lines representing the sea. He holds a trident or spear diagonally across his body in his right hand and a round shield bearing a monogram in his left. A Nike or small Eros figure flies toward him from the upper left, proffering a wreath. The legend ΤΑΡΑΣ appears to the lower left and ΠΥ to the right of the field, the latter denoting a secondary magistrate's abbreviation. The reverse composition exemplifies the finest tradition of Tarentine coin engraving, with accomplished anatomical rendering and a lively marine setting. |
