| Obverse description | Nude youth riding on horseback to the right, wearing a crested helmet and holding two spears in his left hand while extending his right arm forward; a second horse strides alongside to the left, its head turned outward. The composition reflects the Tarentine tradition of depicting the dioskouroi or armed horsemen in dynamic, high-relief style. The flan is broad and irregularly shaped, characteristic of South Italian hammered coinage of this period. The magistrate's name ΣΩΔΑΜΟΣ appears in the field, identifying the issuing magistrate responsible for this emission. |

| Reverse description | The city founder Taras, nude and shown in left-facing profile, rides upon the back of a dolphin to the left above stylized wave-lines representing the sea. He holds a trident or spear diagonally across his body in his right hand and a round shield bearing a monogram in his left. A Nike or small Eros figure flies toward him from the upper left, proffering a wreath. The legend ΤΑΡΑΣ appears to the lower left and ΠΥ to the right of the field, the latter denoting a secondary magistrate's abbreviation. The reverse composition exemplifies the finest tradition of Tarentine coin engraving, with accomplished anatomical rendering and a lively marine setting. |
