John the Fearless inherited Flanders from his father Philip the Bold in 1404 and moved quickly to assert control over the county's mint output. The FL designation distinguishes issues explicitly attributed to Flemish authority rather than to his Burgundian holdings — a distinction that mattered administratively even when the same duke governed both. John's tenure over Flanders ended with his murder at Montereau in 1419, making the window for this type relatively narrow.
