Reverse description The reverse is entirely occupied by a five-line Greek votive inscription arranged across the field, reading as an invocation to the Theotokos on behalf of the usurper Nikephoros Melissenos, who claimed the title of Despot during the civil strife of 1080–1081. The legend is separated into abbreviated syllabic groups typical of late 11th-century Byzantine miliaresia, enclosed within a dotted border. The inscription calls upon the God-bearer to aid the Despot Nikephoros Melissenos.
