Obverse description Central design features a cross potent set upon three graduated steps, the arms of the cross terminating in globules. The cross bisects a two-line circular legend arranged in the field to either side. The entire design is enclosed within a distinctive triple-line border, characteristic of middle Byzantine miliaresia. The lettering is rendered in a bold, slightly irregular hammered style consistent with ninth-century Constantinople workshop production.
