Obverse description Central field dominated by a globus-topped cross crosslet set on two steps, with globules at each arm terminal and flanking the shaft, all rendered in bold relief characteristic of middle Byzantine hammered coinage. Four six-pointed stars are distributed in the quadrants formed by the cross arms. The legend IhSUS XRISTUS nICA (Jesus Christ Triumphs) runs in Latin characters around the periphery. The design is contained within a double beaded border, the outer row forming a prominent raised rim on this irregularly shaped flan.
