Sancho IV came to the throne in 1284 by deposing his own nephews — the infantes de la Cerda — with the backing of the Castilian nobility, and his early coinage reflects the urgency of a king legitimizing a contested succession. The meaja was the smallest denomination in circulation, worth half a dinero, and these billon pieces absorbed whatever metal was available as the crown struggled to finance both internal consolidation and ongoing pressure from Granada and Morocco.
The star privy mark distinguishes this emission from other meajas of his reign and assists in narrowing the striking window to the first years before monetary reforms adjusted the alloy standard.
