Reverse description An octopus rendered in high relief, depicted from above with its bulbous mantle at centre and eight sinuous, curling tentacles radiating symmetrically outward to fill the rounded flan. The tentacles are shown with characteristic sucker detail and graceful spiral terminations, displaying the accomplished die-cutting characteristic of Syracusan coinage of the early fourth century BC. The field is otherwise plain and uninscribed.
