Henry X — "the Black," duke from 1126 — was among the most powerful of the Welf dukes, whose rivalry with the Hohenstaufen shaped German politics for generations. This issue falls squarely within the period of his consolidation of both Bavaria and Saxony, a dual ducal holding that made him the dominant secular prince in the empire until Frederick Barbarossa's grandfather, Conrad III, moved against him in 1138. Henry was stripped of his duchies that year, dying shortly after in 1139.
The light denier weight standard reflects a broader thinning of Bavarian silver coinage through the first half of the twelfth century, driven by declining silver supply from regional mines rather than deliberate debasement.
