| Obverse description | Obverse of this wire money (cheshуika) depicts a mounted warrior — the traditional equestrian figure of the tsar — shown in profile facing right, mounted on a horse and bearing a spear or lance couched forward in the manner standard to Muscovite kopecks of the period. The flan is irregular in outline, characteristic of the rod-cut wire planchet technique. The relief is bold in areas but uneven due to the hand-hammering process. The design is consistent with the conventional rider type employed throughout the reigns of the later Rurikid and early post-Rurikid tsars, here attributed to the Novgorod Mint of Vasiliy IV Shuisky. |
