Vasiliy IV Shuysky ruled during the most chaotic stretch of the Time of Troubles, a period of successive pretenders, Polish intervention, and near-total state collapse. His coinage was struck under siege conditions in Moscow, with minting operations disrupted repeatedly as rival claimants — including the two separate imposters styling themselves Dmitriy — controlled large portions of Russian territory simultaneously. The wire-money technique used here, cutting slugs from drawn silver wire and striking with hand dies, meant output quality varied considerably even within a single day's production.
