Mikhail Romanov's earliest coinage was struck under extraordinarily difficult conditions — the dynasty had been installed in 1613 following the catastrophic Time of Troubles, with the treasury exhausted and much of the country still contested by Polish and Swedish forces. These wire money kopecks were produced by hand-hammering silver rod between dies, a technique unchanged in Russia since the fifteenth century, while Western mints had long since moved to screw presses.
The "о М" mint mark indicates Moscow. Mikhail's reign saw gradual fiscal stabilization, but the silver content remained high precisely because public trust in the coinage had to be rebuilt from near-zero after years of debased emergency issues under the pretenders.
