| Obverse description | Effigy of the Tsar depicted as an armed horseman in profile to the right, mounted on a galloping horse and brandishing a lance (spear) in the raised right hand — the traditional 'copyshchik' (spearman) type inherited from earlier Muscovite coinage. The figure is rendered in the schematic, flat style characteristic of Russian wire money. Mint letters 'o M' (indicating the Moscow Mint) appear beneath the horse's hooves in Cyrillic characters. The flan is irregular in outline, as is typical of the chekanka wire-money (cheshuyky) production technique. |

The lettering is bold and raised, struck in the characteristic archaic Cyrillic script of early seventeenth-century Muscovite coinage. The surface shows the natural irregularity and slight curvature inherent to hammered wire-money flans. |
