Obverse description Equestrian figure of the Tsar depicted as a armored rider on a galloping horse facing right, brandishing a spear (hence the coin's name 'kopeck', derived from 'kopyo', meaning spear). The mintmark letters МА appear beneath the horse's hooves in the lower field, identifying the Pskov mint issue. The design is rendered in the characteristic bold, slightly crude relief typical of mid-16th century Russian wire money (chekhi), struck on an irregularly shaped planchet cut from a silver wire rod.
