Additional information

False Dmitri II never controlled Pskov directly — the city struck coins in his name during a period of shifting allegiances in the Time of Troubles, when local authorities hedged their bets by acknowledging whichever claimant seemed most likely to prevail. His camp was based at Tushino, earning him the mocking nickname "the Thief of Tushino" among contemporaries. Wire money of this type was produced by hammering slivers of silver rod between dies, which is why no two examples share identical shape or strike placement.
