Obverse description Central field bears the crowned Portuguese royal arms — the quinas shield displaying five escutcheons in saltire, each charged with five bezants, enclosed within a bordure of castles — surmounted by a royal crown. The shield is flanked on either side by small pellets or mint marks in the field. The entire central device is set within a raised inner circle, with the circular legend PRIMVS : EMAИVEL : REX : PORTVGALIE distributed around the periphery, separated by pellet stops. The hammered fabric displays characteristic irregular flan edges typical of early sixteenth-century Portuguese coinage.
