Obverse description Facing nimbed bust of the Virgin Orans (Theotokos), shown in three-quarter length with hands raised in the orant posture, set against a stylized depiction of the walls of Constantinople rendered as a turreted enclosure with six towers. The Virgin's maphorion is rendered in fine linear detail characteristic of Palaiologan artistic style. Control letters (sigla) appear in the field flanking the central figure. The Greek Marian inscription MP ΘV (Meter Theou, Mother of God) is positioned in the upper field. A beaded inner border frames the entire composition on the concave surface.
