Reverse description Facing figure of Emperor Michael VII Doukas shown in full imperial regalia, standing or enthroned, wearing crown and loros and holding imperial insignia. The emperor is depicted in the hieratic frontal style typical of late 11th-century Byzantine gold coinage struck at Constantinople. Flanking the imperial figure are decorative column elements visible at left and right of the field. The Greek legend distributed around the field reads the emperor's name and title, identifying him as Michael, basileus of the Romans.
