Obverse description Forepart of a griffin facing left, rendered in archaic Ionian style, with a prominent spherical eye, raised ear or horn, and folded wing indicated by curved incised lines. The figure is depicted in high relief against an irregular, granular field typical of early electrum and silver coinage from the region. No legend or inscription is present, the griffin serving as the civic badge of Phokaia.
