Additional information

Athanodoros served as the magistrate responsible for this issue during a period when Rhodes was navigating the political fallout from its disastrous neutrality during the Third Macedonian War. Rome punished Rhodian ambivalence by stripping the island of its Lycian and Carian territories in 167 BC and establishing Delos as a free port — a direct economic blow that devastated Rhodian trade revenues. The hemidrachm series continued regardless, sustaining a coinage infrastructure the island could ill afford to abandon.
