An outer border of twenty additional coats-of-arms encircles the composition, representing Aarberg, Lenzburg, Brugg, Aarau, Zofingen, Oberhasli, Unterseen, Interlaken, Trachselwald, Murten, Huttwil, Aarburg, Erlach, Aarwangen, Orbe, Grandson, Bipp, Wangen, Büren, and Nidau. The design reflects the late-Gothic heraldic tradition, demonstrating Bern's extensive territorial lordship at the turn of the sixteenth century. |
