| Obverse description | The Bernese bear passant left occupies the central field, with a displayed double-headed imperial eagle above. Seven heraldic shields arranged in a semicircle in the middle register identify the subject territories of Niedersimmental, Frutigen, Burgdorf, Thun, Laupen, Obersimmental, and Aeschi. An outer border of twenty additional coats-of-arms encircles the composition, representing Aarberg, Lenzburg, Brugg, Aarau, Zofingen, Oberhasli, Unterseen, Interlaken, Trachselwald, Murten, Huttwil, Aarburg, Erlach, Aarwangen, Orbe, Grandson, Bipp, Wangen, Büren, and Nidau. The design reflects the late-Gothic heraldic tradition, demonstrating Bern's extensive territorial lordship at the turn of the sixteenth century. |
