Obverse description Central field bears the walking bear of Bern advancing left, the city's heraldic emblem, surmounted by an imperial double-headed eagle. Seven shields arranged in a semicircle below the bear represent the subject territories of Niedersimmental, Frutigen, Burgdorf, Thun, Laupen, Obersimmental, and Aeschi. An outer border of twenty additional coats-of-arms encircles the composition, identifying the lordships of Aarberg, Lenzburg, Brugg, Aarau, Zofingen, Oberhasli, Unterseen, Interlaken, Trachselwald, Murten, Huttwil, Aarburg, Erlach, Aarwangen, Orbe, Grandson, Bipp, Wangen, Büren, and Nidau. The arrangement of heraldic devices reflects Bern's considerable territorial expansion in the late fifteenth century.
