| Opis awersu | Central field depicts a stylized city gate or palatium — a crenellated architectural structure with two flanking towers and a central portal, rendered in the flat, schematic Gothic style typical of Tuscan medieval coinage. Atop the structure perches a displayed imperial eagle with spread wings, referencing the Ghibelline allegiance of Lucca and the authority of the Holy Roman Empire. To either side of the gateway, the abbreviated inscription OTTO and REX appear in the field, invoking the name of the German king and evoking imperial legitimacy. The surrounding circular legend in uncial Latin reads MONETA D' LVCA, identifying the coin as currency of Lucca. The entire design is enclosed within a plain inner circle, with the legend occupying the outer border. |
