Hugh of Chalon governed the Prince-Bishopric of Liège during a period of mounting tension between the prince-bishops and the increasingly assertive urban communes of the Meuse valley. His episcopate also fell squarely within the broader Flemish monetary turbulence of the 1290s, when Philip IV of France's currency manipulations forced neighboring ecclesiastical lordships to respond with their own gros issues to maintain trade competitiveness along the Meuse corridor. The Dengis and Van Hende references for this type are closely aligned, suggesting the die corpus is well-documented relative to other Liégeois episcopal gros of the period.
