Obverse description Facing bust of the Theotokos (Virgin Mary) in orans position, depicted nimbate with a cruciform nimbus, wearing maphorion and richly ornamented garments with jeweled cuffs. Both arms are raised with palms outward in the traditional prayer gesture. The bust is rendered in the hieratic Byzantine style within a beaded inner border, with the abbreviated Greek inscription MHP ΘV (Meter Theou, Mother of God) divided to either side of the figure.
