正面描述 Central device depicting two papal keys crossed saltire-wise, their ornate bows at the foot and wards at the top, with a crescent moon positioned in the upper field between the key shafts. The keys are rendered in fine hammered relief with decorative trefoil terminals at the lower angles of the cross. A beaded inner circle frames the central composition, with the papal legend running continuously around the periphery within a beaded outer border.

附加信息

Comtat Venaissin — the papal enclave in Provence, distinct from Avignon itself — minted under Benedict XIII during one of the most fractious episodes in Church history: the Western Schism, when rival claimants held simultaneous pontificates in Rome and Avignon. Benedict, born Pedro de Luna, was elected by the Avignon cardinals in 1394 and clung to his claim with remarkable tenacity even after the Council of Pisa declared him deposed in 1409. His coinage from Comtat Venaissin served the practical needs of a court perpetually negotiating its legitimacy against French royal pressure and conciliarist opposition.
