The Westerham type takes its name from a 1927 hoard find in Kent — territory that sat at the contested boundary between Catuvellauni expansion westward and the older iron-age tribal zones of the southeast. These quarter staters circulated as a fractional denomination during a period when cross-channel trade with Armorican Gaul was being disrupted by Caesar's campaigns, forcing British tribes to develop increasingly autonomous monetary systems rather than relying on imported Gaulish blanks.
The geometric abstraction characteristic of this type reflects a late stage of the Gallo-Belgic devolution sequence, far removed from the Macedonian stater prototypes that seeded British Celtic coinage three centuries earlier.
