The Atrebates established themselves in southern Britain after migrating from the Atrebates tribe of Belgic Gaul — Caesar names them explicitly among the peoples he encountered — bringing with them a coinage tradition derived ultimately from the Macedonian gold staters of Philip II, so thoroughly abstracted through generations of Celtic copying that the original charioteer and horse had dissolved into pure geometric form. These fractional pieces circulated in the territory roughly corresponding to modern Hampshire and West Sussex, a zone whose tribal boundaries shifted considerably in the decades before the Claudian invasion of 43 AD.
ABC 626 is among the earlier uninscribed issues, predating the named coinages of Commius and his sons.
