The Atrebates — whose territory covered much of modern Hampshire, West Sussex, and Berkshire — were among the tribes most directly disrupted by Caesar's two expeditions into Britain in 55 and 54 BC. This coin type belongs to the period immediately following that contact, when Commios, the Atrebatian king who had initially served as Caesar's envoy, broke violently with Rome and fled to Britain after a failed assassination attempt. The political turbulence of his reign almost certainly drove the proliferation of fractional gold issues as tribal authority fragmented.
The "Rayed" or "Ratham Rose" series is distinguished by its unusually fine pellet-and-ring die work for a quarter stater, a level of engraving precision rarely sustained at this weight class.
