Valentinian II was twelve years old when elevated to co-emperor in 375, a dynastic maneuver by the army following his father Valentinian I's sudden death from a burst blood vessel while shouting at a Quadic delegation. For most of his reign he was emperor in name only, dominated first by his mother Justina and then by the Frankish general Arbogast, who would eventually order — or at minimum enable — his murder in 392.
The Antioch mint was operating under considerable administrative pressure during this window, producing for multiple co-emperors simultaneously. RIC IX 59b places this piece within a tightly sequenced group distinguished by officina letter.
