Obverse description Frontal bust of Emperor Theophilos in imperial regalia, wearing a crown surmounted by a cross and adorned with pendilia, draped in a loros decorated with jewelled ornamentation. The emperor holds imperial regalia in the Byzantine hieratic style, with the effigy rendered in a stylized, flat manner characteristic of mid-ninth-century Constantinopolitan coinage. A two-line Greek legend divided across the field reads ΘEOΦIL bASIL, abbreviating 'Theophilos Basileus' (The Emperor Theophilos). The flan is irregular in shape, as is typical of hammered Byzantine copper issues of this period.

Reverse description The reverse bears a five-line Greek inscription arranged across the field, reading +ΘEO / FILE / AVG / OVStE / SV nICAS, a votive acclamation meaning 'O Theophilos the Augustus, may you conquer.' The legend is disposed in horizontal lines separated by decorative dashes or lines, a format characteristic of the folles struck at Constantinople under Theophilos. The field is flat with no additional decorative elements, and the coin retains the irregular flan shape and somewhat coarse strike typical of hammered Byzantine copper coinage of the period.
