| Obverse description | Frontal bust of Emperor Theophilos in imperial regalia, wearing a crown surmounted by a cross and adorned with pendilia, draped in a loros decorated with jewelled ornamentation. The emperor holds imperial regalia in the Byzantine hieratic style, with the effigy rendered in a stylized, flat manner characteristic of mid-ninth-century Constantinopolitan coinage.
