| Obverse description | Two facing imperial busts rendered in the flat, hieratic Byzantine style characteristic of the ninth century. To the left, the bearded effigy of Emperor Michael II, draped in the military chlamys and wearing a crown surmounted by a cross; to the right, the beardless effigy of co-emperor Theophilos, attired in the ceremonial loros and similarly crowned with a cross. The legend flanking the busts identifies both rulers in abbreviated Greek. The coin exhibits the broad, slightly irregular flan and bold, shallow relief typical of Constantinopolitan hammered copper issues of this period. |
