| Obverse description | Facing bust of Emperor Leo VI, crowned and bearded, draped in the imperial chlamys. The effigy is rendered in the frontal, hieratic style characteristic of middle Byzantine coinage. The emperor holds the akakia in his left hand, a symbol of imperial authority. A legend surrounds the bust identifying the ruler as basileus of the Romans. The portrait displays the stylized, flat relief typical of Macedonian-dynasty bronze coinage. |
