| Reversbeschreibung | No legend. The reverse presents two crowned imperial busts facing forward above a large module letter M: Leo III on the left and Constantine V on the right, both depicted with short beards and wearing the imperial loros. A cross divides their heads at center, with three pellets arranged vertically to the left and three pellets to the right of the busts. The entire figural group is set above a horizontal line, beneath which the large denomination letter M appears, flanked by X to the left and N to the right, with the letter A below in the exergue. |

Leo IV ruled for just five years before dying of fever in 780 — possibly, according to some sources, after handling jewels from the crown of Hagia Sophia, though the palace conspiracy theories surrounding his death were never resolved. His son Constantine VI was only nine years old at accession, leaving the empire effectively under the regency of the formidable Irene, who would eventually have her own son blinded and deposed to rule alone.
The co-regency coinage of this period reflects a deliberate legitimizing strategy: placing both emperors on the follis was a political act, not a design choice. Constantine VI's numismatic presence here predates his actual authority by years.
