Reverse description Large capital letter M occupying the central field, derived directly from the Byzantine follis denomination mark, flanked on either side by subsidiary letters or numerals. A cross or star device appears above the M. Kufic Arabic inscriptions are placed in the fields to the left and right of the central mark, identifying the mint and province. A linear border or dotted circle frames the design. The type exemplifies the transitional Arab-Byzantine coinage of the Umayyad period, retaining Byzantine numismatic conventions while introducing Islamic epigraphy.
