Obverse description Facing bust of Christ Pantokrator, nimbed with a cross, depicted in frontal hieratic style wearing the pallium and colobium. Christ holds a book of the Gospels with both hands before his chest. The field is flanked by the Christogram IC XC, and the legend +ΕΜΜΑ ΝΟVΗΑ (Emmanuel) arcs across the upper field, identifying the figure as the Emmanuel type. The overall composition reflects the austere, iconic Byzantine artistic convention of the mid-eleventh century.
