Obverse description Facing busts of Constantine VII, unbearded and crowned, at left, clad in the imperial loros, and Empress Zoe, at right, wearing chlamys, both depicted in the rigid hieratic style characteristic of middle Byzantine coinage. Between the two effigies, a patriarchal cross is held jointly, serving as a dynastic and religious emblem. The portraits are rendered in low relief with schematic facial features typical of the hammered copper coinage of this period. The surrounding field bears the abbreviated Greek imperial titulature in majuscule characters.
