| Reverse description | Facing bust of the Virgin Orans depicted in three-quarter length within a beaded inner circle, wearing the maphorion and tunic rendered in detailed drapery folds. The Virgin's hands are raised in the orant posture, with her arms partially visible at either side. The face is rendered in the austere Byzantine hieratic style with large eyes and a solemn expression. The abbreviated Greek legend MP ΘV appears in the field to either side of the bust, identifying her as the Mother of God (Meter Theou). The reverse field shows typical die wear and flan irregularity consistent with hammered Byzantine copper coinage of the mid-eleventh century. |
