Juan II inherited Majorca as part of the Crown of Aragon following the death of Alfonso V in 1458, and these florins were struck under his authority during a reign defined largely by civil war on the Catalan mainland. The Catalan Remença rebellion and the protracted conflict with the Generalitat consumed enormous royal resources, making coin production across Aragonese territories irregular throughout the 1460s and 1470s.
The Majorcan florin derives its type from the Florentine florin, adopted across Aragon by Pedro IV in the mid-fourteenth century as a deliberate bid for commercial credibility in Mediterranean trade networks.
