| Obverse description | Full-length figure of Saint John the Baptist standing facing within a beaded inner circle, robed in flowing liturgical vestments, raising his right hand in blessing and holding a patriarchal cross-staff in his left. The saint's nimbus is clearly visible behind his bearded head. The surrounding legend in Gothic uncial characters reads between the inner beaded circle and the coin's irregular rim. |

| Additional information |
John of Bavaria held the see of Liege from 1389 but spent much of his episcopate in open conflict with his own chapter and citizenry. The Liégeois revolted repeatedly against his authority, culminating in the Battle of Othée in 1408, where John secured a decisive — and brutal — victory with the military backing of his brother, William VI of Holland. The city was stripped of its charters and its great bell cast down.
This florin belongs to a pontificate defined more by armed suppression than pastoral governance. John resigned the bishopric in 1418 to pursue his claim to the County of Holland.
