Isma'il ibn Ahmad consolidated Samanid authority over Transoxiana after defeating the Saffarid ruler 'Amr ibn al-Layth at the Battle of Balkh in 900 AD, a victory that dramatically expanded the dynasty's reach and effectively made the Samanids the dominant power in the eastern caliphate. Al-Shash — modern Tashkent — was a prosperous copper-producing region, which made it a natural center for fals production serving local market transactions that silver dirhams were too valuable to handle.
Album 1444 encompasses considerable variety in module and die workmanship across mints; al-Shash examples tend toward cruder execution than the Samarqand issues of the same reign.
