Reverse description Quartered shield of Castile and Leon within a beaded inner circle, displaying alternating castles (for Castile) in the first and fourth quarters and rampant lions (for Leon) in the second and third quarters, each quarter rendered in bold relief in the characteristic late medieval Castilian style. A plain cross with equal arms divides the quarters. The surrounding Latin legend ALFONSVS DEI GRACIA REX CASTE runs along the periphery between the inner beaded circle and the irregular hammered edge, identifying the issuer as Alfonso, King of Castile by the grace of God.
