Juan II of Aragon authorized Valencia's gold ducado as part of a deliberate alignment with Venetian ducat standards, giving Aragonese merchants a coin that traded at par across Mediterranean ports without requiring revaluation. The Valencia mint operated under strict royal supervision during this period, and production of the ducado was tied directly to the crown's need to finance the ongoing war against France over the Roussillon and Cerdagne territories — a conflict that had dragged on, with interruptions, since 1462.
Juan II died in January 1479, making this a short emission window of roughly two years.
