Drachm - Varhran IV type I/3

Varhran IV's eleven-year reign is poorly documented in both Armenian and Byzantine sources, and numismatists have largely had to reconstruct its chronology through die studies rather than historical record. The type I/3 classification in Göbl's system reflects a mint or emission variant within what is itself already a narrow window — Sasanian drachms of this period were struck under a king whose political position required continuous negotiation with Rome following the 387 partition of Armenia, a settlement that reshaped Persian frontier policy for a generation.
