Additional information

Mithridates I transformed the Parthian state from a minor regional kingdom into an empire during his reign, seizing Media around 148 BC and Seleucia-on-the-Tigris — the wealthiest city in the Near East — by 141 BC. The coinage followed the conquests: earlier issues in this series show him with a simple diadem, while later emissions adopt the full Hellenistic royal title *Basileos Megalou*, reflecting his claim to Seleucid imperial succession. Sellwood 12.2 belongs to the mature phase of his output, struck from mints now controlling the Iranian plateau and Mesopotamia simultaneously.
