Reverse description An owl depicted standing left with head facing forward in three-quarter view, wings closed, rendered in the Lycian artistic tradition. The bird is positioned at the center of a tetraskeles (four-armed pinwheel symbol), whose arms radiate outward within an incuse square. A Lycian legend is disposed around the central devices within the incuse square, identifying the dynast Kheriga of Phellos. The overall composition is deeply struck into the flan in incuse relief.

Additional information

Kheriga was among the most powerful of the Lycian dynasts, ruling from Xanthos and conducting what amounted to an independent foreign policy during the turbulent decades of Athenian imperial expansion and Persian reassertion across western Anatolia. The mint at Phellos — a secondary city in the Lycian hills — indicates either a deliberate administrative decentralization or a specific military or fiscal need tied to that region, details that remain contested in the numismatic literature.

The Müseler V, 45 reference places this among a closely studied dynastic sequence, but individual die links within Kheriga's coinage are still being resolved by specialists.
