| 裏面の説明 | A fully open rose blossom depicted in high relief at centre, shown face-on with spreading petals and a prominent central calyx, set within a shallow incuse square (plinthophoron). To the left of the rose stalk appears the letter P (rho), and to the right the letter O (omicron), together forming the ethnic abbreviation PO for Rhodes. The magistrate's name ΑΘΑΝΟΔΩΡΟΣ (Athanodoros) is inscribed in Greek letters along the upper border of the incuse square. The rose, the civic badge of Rhodes, is rendered with fine naturalistic detail characteristic of the plintophoric series. |

Rhodes in the mid-second century BC was navigating a sharp decline in political standing following Roman anger over the island's ambiguous neutrality during the Third Macedonian War — a stance that cost the Rhodians their lucrative Lycian and Carian territories in 167 BC. The magistrate name Athanodoros places this issue squarely within the period of economic adjustment that followed, when the mint worked to maintain silver coinage quality even as the city's trading revenues contracted significantly.
