| Obverse description | Bust of Ardashir II facing right, bearded and draped, wearing a distinctive mural crown surmounted by a large korymbos (hair globe) enclosed in a diadem. The king's elaborate coiffure and necklace are rendered in characteristic Sasanian style. A Middle Persian (Pahlavi) legend surrounds the effigy within a beaded border, giving the royal titulature. The portrait is executed in bold high relief typical of mid-fourth century Sasanian coinage. |
